Many patients assume that their teeth are the most important part of the mouth and the telltale indicator of great oral health. Here at Ashburn General Dentistry, we like to make sure our patients know that healthy gum tissue is also a crucial part of a bright smile and good dental health.

Our gentle and caring dentist, Dr. Patel, strives to educate our patients about the perils of periodontal disease, which is also commonly referred to as gum disease. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that can become progressively worse and eventually destroy the gums and other structures that support the teeth.

Periodontal disease is dangerous to your oral health because it is a painless infection that silently attacks — and continues to attack your gum tissue — unless you seek proper treatment from a competent dentist like Dr. Patel.

Conventional periodontal treatment consists of a two-part process called scaling and root planing, also commonly known as “deep cleaning.”

Here’s how it works: Tartar is plaque that has hardened over time. Scaling is the process of carefully removing tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planing is a procedure in which the rough areas on a tooth are made smooth again. These rough spots are problematic, because bacteria tend to accumulate in those areas, contributing to the disease.

So, if you’ve noticed that your gums are swollen, red, or bleeding, these symptoms may be signs of periodontal disease. Be sure to call 703.724.4470 and schedule an appointment to visit Dr. Patel, and we’ll take very good care of you and your gums!
